Exploring the Information Design Journal (IDJ) and Its Role in Research and Practice
This talk will provide an overview of the Information Design Journal (IDJ), highlighting its mission, scope, and contributions to the field. As a peer-reviewed international publication, IDJ focuses on how design enhances the communication of complex information, making it clearer, more accessible, and more effective for various audiences.
The journal covers a wide range of topics, including visual and typographic design, exploring how text, images, and layout contribute to effective communication. It also examines information visualisation, focusing on ways to represent data and complex information visually to improve understanding. In the area of user experience and usability, IDJ investigates design strategies that enhance clarity and accessibility for different users.
Another key focus is cross-cultural and multilingual communication, addressing how information design can be adapted for diverse languages and cultural contexts. The journal also explores digital and interactive media, analysing the role of design in digital platforms, user interfaces, and interactive experiences. Wayfinding and spatial communication is another important area, examining how design supports navigation, signage, and environmental communication. Additionally, IDJ covers health and safety communication, looking at how design contributes to public health messaging, medical guidance, and emergency communication.
The talk will also discuss the journal’s editorial direction, opportunities for researchers and practitioners to contribute, and emerging trends in the field. It will be of interest to those working in information design, communication, and related disciplines who are keen to explore how design shapes the way information is shared and understood.
