One of our core aims is to grow and support a community of information designers, students, researchers and teachers around the world.
Information designers often come to the profession from a background in graphic design, illustration or language skills. But many emerge from professions which need to communicate, and add design to their content expertise – medicine, engineering, law, for example.
Over many years IIID has been involved in developing teaching programmes, in education research, as well as teaching our own Summer School format.
In 2024 we started IIID Studio, a multi-national, multi-university student project.
IIID maintains a worldwide register of information design courses. It was established as a resource and a platform for teaching institutions committed to developing and promoting information design.
